  1. Hi Molly,

I saw a pre-recording of you today on the Pat McMahan Show. I really wish I was able to speak to you in person about my resume and the Routine Maintenance Job and the finding the job that is right for me. I have worked as a temp for years until I finally landed a job as a Phone Banker for a well-known bank here and then was promoted to a PC Lan Analyst at the same bank. A friend mentioned to me that I should take up learning about computers in order to make more money and get out of the paycheck to paycheck stage. Then in 2003 I was laid off from that company and it took me 7 to 8 months to find a job as a contractor. But all the while I knew I should be doing something different with my life. I had a friend who would as me to show up at his office for their yearly business networking parties (he owned a printing company) and he would give me the run down of his business to speak to potential clients about. Of course he paid me on the side, but I actually was good at it. But after I got the Helpdesk job with an It company, I never could figure out how to pursue that job. Then 2 years later I ended up working for an outsource company as a Tech Support Rep.
And then towards the end of 2008 they laid off about 200 people, and I was one of them. I have had interviews and left the state to find a job in Texas, only to run out of money and had to come back and live with my family. I am still looking for a job, and applying to anything worth while and even at 2 or 4 dollars less than what I would normally make.
Yet I really don’t want to do anymore call center type jobs, I love networking (since that is what the job is called now) for people. I run into friends or people in general and they are looking for a job, and I just happen to know the company or person/s that are hiring for the exact position that they are looking for.
I am all about customer service, but more on the end of training people how they should serve their customers or connecting people to the right organization or person/s. I just don’t know how to get unstuck. I had only 6 more classes left in order to get a bachelors in Information Systems, which related to the positions I was in. Sometimes I feel like I need a life coach, but can’t afford one. I am living on unemployment and having a real hard time trying to pay my bills. I really need a job soon. I will be a whole year in November that I have been laid off. And I am really getting tired of I am over qualified for positions that I know I am qualified.

    Can you help me?

    • Tanya,
It’s really clear to me what you need to do!

First, you need to get a job in business development. It’s obvious that’s what your calling is. And don’t think of it “schmoozing.” Great business developers are all about connecting the right people, serving the customer.

I also think you should finsih that degree. Six more classes. That’s nothing! You have time. Sounds like you could apply for financial aid. Don’t let this one go. You are sooooo close. Plus, you never know who you’ll meet in class!

As for the business development type positions…first, think about what kind of products/services/customers you want to be associated with (perhaps IT services??). Then, go to a few networking groups that cater to these types, such as SMPS – Society of Marketing Professional Services. It’s mostly business development people. Also, go to AZ Sales Pros.

Great business development people are not easy to find, and you just sound like a natural. Maybe you should give it a try!!

      Hope that helps!
      Molly

  2. Hey Molly! I just finished your book this morning. It was enlightening, refreshing. The old search methods are so dead-ending.

I am going to employ some of your methods. I have nothing to lose. I am very fortunate in that I am working currently, but am trying to move up into administration now that I have completed my degreee (9/09).

The educational administration field seems a bit crowded (as most industries may be at this time) in New York State. I’m hearing applicant numbers upwards of 80 for most positions.

I think your book will help me to become a candidate that stands out and enhance my chances of being selected. The education field is a bit different in some aspects from the private sector—but your book drove home the incredible power and importance of helping others and networking in a selfless manner.

Your website is nice. Your book moved me. You seem like a very cool person!! Are you busy next Saturday night? Haaaa

Thanks for all the help Molly!

    Gratefully, Bob Chantra

    • Thanks so much Bob!! Don’t worry about the ‘field being crowded.’ You’ll definitely stand out if you do things differently!
After all, you only need one job, right?!
      Molly

  3. Thanks Danielle!
I’m speaking again on October 8th at Skysong. It’s for an association, but I’m sure it would be okay if you wanted to attend. Here’s the link to register: http://www.apicsphoenix.org/pdm.shtml

    Hope to see you!

  4. Hi Molly,

I am an undergraduate student looking to become a high school English teacher. What tips can you give me to start the process of networking and more towards my career path?

    Thanks!

    Sarah Browne

  5. Molly – it was such a pleasure meeting you when you were here in Salt Lake City. I am so glad Ken Sharrar invited me to the gathering. It was fun, surprising and inspirational to have you zero in so quickly on what you felt my strengths are and where you thought I might best put my talents to work next. Am working on putting it all together – excited about what the future holds.

    Thank you!
    Karen Sendelback
