Dinos, that's a great question. The key here - if you like to do something different - then you'd better be really good at asking thoughtful questions. That's the way to get people less focused on your past and more focused on what you can actually do for the company. The second you put your resume in front of them, it becomes all about what you did. It's hard to change the conversation into what you can do at that point. Hard. But not impossible.

I get asked for help in the grocery store, and believe me I'm a guy, and I am struggling to finish my list. To your point Molly, I asked people why they asked me, you can tell I don't work for the super market. They always say, you look like a friendly person. Wow, after reading the blog, I will no longer be annoyed, it is a total compliment, and I like that idea.

Molly,
this is an insightful post. I think it's particularly difficult for consultants who've done a broad range of work to get past the "ATH" label you mention, when searching for an operational role. I've had more than one hiring manager tell me "you have broad experience but you wouldn't be effective in a product management role because for that we really need someone with deep expertise in that area. You'd be better off in corporate strategic marketing covering a lot of areas" (but those roles usually go to people out of the top tier strategy firms being groomed for future exec roles).

However, I do think that smaller firms have an opportunity for people with somewhat broader experience. Here, someone might be a VP of both sales AND marketing, so has to be good at both. A line employee may have to cover a lot more ground since there isn't the luxury of specializing and doing just the same thing over and over. Still, to be effective they have to have expertise.

Which brings me to ask, with the degree of ultra-specialization in today's economy, what if you're the sort of person who likes to learn something new in a position as opposed to just turning the crank and doing the same thing over and over again? It seems there's less and less room for that

Molly - it was such a pleasure meeting you when you were here in Salt Lake City. I am so glad Ken Sharrar invited me to the gathering. It was fun, surprising and inspirational to have you zero in so quickly on what you felt my strengths are and where you thought I might best put my talents to work next. Am working on putting it all together - excited about what the future holds.

Thank you!

Absolutely spot on correct! At 300 e-mails a day (which was NOT unusual in my experience) and 5 min of thought to respond to it. Your day is done (24 hrs of it anyway) just to finish e-mails. Tone, intent everything from face to face is totally lost, until a conflict arises. and then all hell breaks lose.
Face to face should and needs to be the new trend - it will not happen until reams of e-mails and im's are brought into a lawsuit - then the volume will cease. Interesting that is what usually has to happen before behaviors change.
